Facebook News Feed Systems

Scaling News Feed consistency through a unified design system (2021)

Context

As part of the News Feed team, I focused on maintaining design integrity and quality across one of the most high-traffic surfaces in the world. I served as a System Designer and Design Reviewer, ensuring that new features not only aligned with the Facebook Design System but also scaled effectively across the entire ecosystem

Problems

With numerous product teams building for News Feed simultaneously, several pain points emerged:

  • Quality Fragmentation: Many new products went live without formal quality checks or alignment with existing design patterns.

  • Scalability Issues: New UI patterns were often optimized for single use cases rather than the broader NF ecosystem.

  • Engagement Decay: Inconsistent experiences contributed to a noticeable decrease in overall user engagement.

  • High-Risk Content: Critical areas like Elections and Misinformation required a delicate balance of introducing intentional "friction" while maintaining a high-quality user experience.

The Solution: A Unified Governance Model

I led a cross-functional effort to develop a new review framework and updated our core design system components to maintain a cohesive user experience.

1. System Stewardship

I authored Best Practices Guidelines to provide partner teams with a clear roadmap for building NF-compliant experiences.

*Note: Due to the confidential nature of my work at Facebook, detailed visuals are limited. I am happy to discuss my process and the specific design challenges I solved during a 1:1 conversation.

2. The Approval Process

We introduced a formal review process along with key principles to ensure every change added ecosystem value. The workflow included:

  • Education: Understanding DS principles.

  • Engagement: Submitting designs to the XFN (Cross-functional) team.

  • Alignment: Attending office hours for live feedback and iteration.

  • Execution: Final approval before testing and deployment.

3. Cross-Functional Alignment

I led working sessions with Contextual Profiles, Groups, and Conversations teams. By identifying emerging patterns across the app, I helped align disparate product teams to ensure a cohesive user journey from the News Feed to deeper surfaces.

Key Principles

To maintain a high-quality bar, I evaluated every project against four core pillars:

  • Content First: Prioritizing the core information the user is seeking.

  • Consistency: Reducing cognitive load through familiar patterns.

  • Ecosystem Value: Ensuring new features benefit the entire platform, not just a single vertical.

  • Focus on People Problems: Grounding every design decision in a real user need.

Audit & Standardization: I identified multiple inconsistent implementations of the label component across different teams. After auditing these use cases, I proposed a unified standard to ensure long-term consistency and scalability across the system.

Impact & Results

  • Standardized Quality: Established a mandatory review process that eliminated "rogue" UI patterns.

  • Strengthened Product Thinking: Mentored partner teams (including high-risk areas like Elections) to refine their designs to meet both compliance standards and product goals.

  • Scalable Frameworks: Successfully migrated isolated designs into shared, reusable system components.
